A team whose losses reached 10,000 by the year 2007, the Philadelphia Phillies may seem to be at the lowest rank of the National League but the Phillies holds 31 Hall of Famers. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 1969, the Phillies have been playing in the Eastern Division of the National League.

In order to win the pennant in the NL east in the 1980 season, the Phillies faced a game with the Astros. Fielder Gary Maddox made it possible for his team to win their first-ever pennant in 30 years. The team’s controversies, especially on the players’ addiction to drugs during the 1980s left the team to a much unpopular phase. The Phillies had a series of bad seasons after the 1989 season when player Mike Schmidt retired. However, Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra and Curt Schilling were among those whom fans admired despite the team’s losing rank.

The Phillies finally had consecutive winnings for the 2003 to 2006 seasons. Their 2004 season was proven to be a good season, having placed second in NL East. It was on 2006 when several analysts believed that the Phillies should be out of the league but it was their manager, Pat Gillick, who wanted to transform the team’s identity. With Gillick’s effort to convert the team’s disposition, he traded some of his players which included San Fasano, David Bell, Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle.

The Phillies’ name is sometimes misspelled as Philladelphia Phillies, Philadelfya Philies, Philadelphia Pillies, Philedelphia Philies and Philadelphia Philis.
