The New York Yankees, a.k.a. “the Yanks” are the professional Major League baseball team that is currently based in the borough of The Bronx, in New York. “The Yanks”, a shortened term for the team, is also famously called as “the Bronx Bombers” or “the Bombers” in short. Their critics also called them as “the Bronx Zoo” or “the Evil Empire” but then both names were still accepted by the fans. Among Yankees’ famous players are Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Roger Clemens.

 

The Yanks were one of the American League’s eight charter franchises. The team’s history started playing in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles. In 1903, they moved to New York and became the New York Highlanders. They have been playing at the Yankee Stadium since 1923 up to present. The team had also won 39 American League Pennants already and 26 World Series titles making them the most successful franchise in North American professional sports history. They passed the 24 titles of the 1999 Montreal Canadiens.

 

The New York Yankees are also one of the longest standing and most storied rivalries in the North American sports. The rivalry between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees has centered on the supposed Curse of the Bambino. This gained even more importance after the creation of the Wild Card in 1995, which allowed the two teams to meet in the challenging playoffs.
