The Florida Marlins or “The Fish” as they are fondly reffered to, was established in 1993 as a team in Major League Baseball. Based in the Miami, Florida Metropolitan Area, the Marlins had been playing in the Eastern Division of the National League. Fortunate enough to have been formed in a time where wild card entries can win the World Series Championship, the Fish had achieved the 1997 and 2003 World Series Championship titles.

Rene Lachemann, the Marlins’ first manager, kept the team out of Eastern Division in the 1993 season because the team just went second-to-the-last the previous year, the Mets being in the last place. Soon after, Lachemann was replaced by John Boles at the middle of the 1996 season. Their 1996 season was not bad after all since strong perfomances by several players emerged that year. They are Kevin Brown, Al Leiter and Charles Johnson. At the end of that season, the Marlins ended up with an 80-82 record. Jim Leyland, Pittsburgh Pirates’ previous manager, took Boles’ position as manager and it was during his leadership that the Marlins won their first World Series Title. The next year was an unexpected event. Due to financial losses, the team was forced to give up some of its powerful player—Moises Alou, Bobby Bonilla, Kevin Browna and Gary Sheffield. This led to a decline on the over-all performance of the team who ended the 1998 season with a 54-108 win-loss record.

The Marlins had a rough time at the start of the 2003 World Series Championships having lost their powerful pitchers, John Beckett A.J. Burnett and Mark Redman. Jeff Torborg, their manager was also replaced by Jack McKeon. Nevertheles, with the help of aditional players, they went second to the Atlanta Braves. But because of the wild card spot that the Marlins won in the Division Series, it led them to fight the New York Yankees in the World Series. For the second time, the Marlins won the World Series Championship title.
