Also known as the Olde Towne Team and the BoSox (a portmanteau of Boston and Sox), Boston Red Sox is a professional Major League Baseball team. They are based in Boston, Massachusetts. Newspapers and fans would simply call them “The Sox”. Among the team’s well-recognized players are David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and Curt Schilling.
Their home field is the Fenway Park, the oldest major league ballpark still in operation and this was opened on April 20, 1912. They got their first World Series in 1903 as the Boston Americans in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2004, they incredibly won their recent World Series championship, after an 80-year interval. They have been one of the most successful teams since then but it has been 80 years since the team didn’t get a championship until 2004. Some people blamed the sale of Babe Ruth which they call the Curse of the Bambino.
For the next seven years, after the playoff game in 1978, the Sox didn’t reach the postseason, getting a place no higher than third place in their division during that period. In the year 1986, the table has been turned for the Sox. Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Don Baylor, and future Hall of Famer Wade Boggs strengthened the team’s offense. It was in 1992 when Jean Yawkey died which gave the team tough years to make it back to the playoffs. They won the American League Wild Card but had unfortunately lost to the Indians in the division series on 1998.
Among the sports stuffs the team has are Manny Ramirez’s photo mint, David Ortiz’s autographed right earflap batting helmet and Curt Schilling’s signed baseball. Common typographical errors of the team’s name are Bustone Rid Sax, Bostin Redd Sacks, Bosston Rede Socks, Bosston Red Sax, Buston Reed Six, and Boshton Read Sox.
