Reggie Jackson, a major league right fielder and son of a Negro Leagues player, was born on May 18, 1946 in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Later, he moved in Oakland, California. Being good at “clutch hitting” in the post season, he was also known to the people as “Mr. October”.
Jackson excelled in football and baseball in Cheltenham High School and graduated in 1964. Jackson then studied as a football scholar in Arizona State University. Jackson impressed Coach Bobby Winkles with his skills when he switched to baseball on his sophomore year.
On June 9, 1967, Jackson had his major league career debut with the winning A’s at 6-0 versus the Cleveland Indians. Jackson then completed 47 home runs in the next season. During the All-Star game in 1971, Jackson hit an unforgettable home run. Jackson gave an impressive contribution to the A’s in winning the Western Division title of the American League in 1971. Jackson also played a remarkable role to the A’s in 1973 in claiming the pennant. It was because of this reason that in the 1973 season, Jackson was titled “Most Valuable Player” of the American League. On the 2nd day of April, 1976, Jackson has been traded to the team of the Baltimore Orioles. Jackson agreed to join the New York Yankees after being able to play quite some several times with the Orioles. By the year 1980, Jackson achieved a batting average of .300 and home runs of 41. Jackson’s talents brought him to the 1993 Baseball Hall of Fame. In the 1999 list of the greatest baseball players on The Sporting News, Jackson was on the 48 spot. In the Major League Baseball of 1999, Jackson was acclaimed as one of the 100 finalists for the All-Century Team. He played from 1967 until 1987.
