Born on the 31st of January, 1931 in Dallas Texas, Ernie Banks is a former Major League Baseball player. For his entire career, he played for the Chicago Cubs. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is nicknamed Mr. Cub.

 

In 1950, he signed with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League and got into the major leagues in 1953 with the Chicago Cubs. He started as a shortstop and moved to the first base in 1962. On September 2, 1965, he hit his 400th home run. And following five years later, he hit his 500th home run at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. By May 8, 1973, Cubs manager Whitey Lockman was ejected from the game. So Banks filled in as manager for the two innings of the 12-inning 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

 

Banks is considered one of the most popular baseball players in Chicago sports history. On August 22, 1982, his jersey number 14 became the first to be retired by the Cubs. In 1977, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame making the Banks, Ernie auto (Cubs) (grey) (MLB) jersey a valuable piece. In 1999, he ranked 38th on The Sporting News list of Baseball’s Greatest Players. He was also elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
