Gooden got 300 strikeouts in 191 innings that amazed New York Mets Manager Davey Johnson and got Gooden to play in the Majors. His Major League debut was on April 7, 1984 with the New York Mets at the age of 19. Playing in the majors really showed Gooden’s potentials. He even received several awards like, Rookie of the year, and was the first ever-youngest recipient of the Cy Young Award. By the year 1986 Gooden was able to compile a 17- 6 record and his strikeouts were fifth in the National League.
Having gotten this far in his career Gooden encountered difficulties along the way. He had several injuries and was even found to involve himself into drugs.
