In 1984 the tournament favorite North Carolina Tarheels (27-2) were led by Player of the Year, Michael Jordan. The Tarheels were upset in the East Regional Semifinals by unranked Indiana, 72-68. The National Championship game pitted the 2 losing teams in the past 2 NCAA title games against each other. Georgetown, led by tournament MVP Patrick Ewing, squared off against last year's MVP, Akeem Olajuwon and the Houston Cougars. The two most celebrated big men in college basketball were meeting in competition for the first time, but neither was a stranger to the season finale. Georgetown took the NCAA title by a score of 84-75. Later that year Michael Jordan went on to be the 3rd player chosen in the NBA draft, following the 7' Olajuwon and 7'1" Kentucky center, Sam Bowie.
